Last week, along with Diana came Emily. Emily’s parents wanted to see if their daughter would allow me to photograph her as she is very shy. Well, she was doing great posing for Diana’s mother point-and-shoot, but when she saw my big camera, she ran away! Well, I was up for the challenge! Knowing that she may feel more comfortable with Diana at first, I asked her to sit by the rail tracks with Diana for a few shots.

Sooner than she could say “cheese” she realized she was all alone in front of my camera and the shyness went away! From this point forward she wanted to imitate Diana in every way possible and would even give her some tips on posing!!! She was so cute to photograph! Enjoy the images below.
Photographing children is not about how they can or cannot pose. I often see parents become initially frustrated because they want their child to “pose” for the shot in a specific way. My answer to them is always the same: “Let them be…Let them get used to the environment and the camera.” I believe that the best way to photograph children is by simply letting them be themselves without the force of a “pose” that may cause agitation and even some tears. In the photos below, I did not, in any way, tell Emily how to pose. I merely placed her in the different places and she did the rest! Yes, sometimes a little help here an there is necessary, but children will express who they are without much effort if you are patient enough.

The shots above where really the “warm-up shots.” After these, Emily took charge of the whole thing! It was sooo much fun!

Well, Emily was stupendous! She did such a fabulous job during her first photo shoot! I would like to thank her parents for allowing her to come along and I hope we can do it again soon!
One one of my recent trips to Canada to visit my beautiful girl, my sister-in-law and her lovely family asked me for some family portraits. As the proud God-father of their first and only child (so far!!!), Armando Nicolas, I accepted the honor! We headed over Victoria park in Kitchener on a gorgeous Fall day to take the photographs below. I am blessed to have a beautiful family and to be the God-Father of Armandito.
Many parents grow impatient when taking photographs of their children because they expect them to know how to model from the start. I’m a firm believer that the best way to capture a child’s image is to let him be on his own; to let him/her absorb the environment. Armandito chose to sit by this metal boat after a bit of play. His image is relaxed and expressive all at once, which makes a great portrait.

In the image below, Armando Jr. let go of his parents hands and came running straight at me. Of course, I couldn’t let go of this extraordinary opportunity to capture the action, making this image my favorite one of the collection.

Thank you Marcela and Armando Sr. for the wonderful time and allowing me to capture your wonderful family!! I love you guys!
Joshua is a sweet little boy and his parent’s jewel! When Janey and Carlos spoke to me about photographing Joshua, there was no doubt that we had to conduct the session in Joshua’s favorite spot to hang out with daddy, the baseball field! With his favorite autographed ball, we met at Indian Hammocks Park under an incredible Saturday morning. Enjoy the shots!

After the session with Joshua, we headed to the shady area for some portraits of the entire family.

Thank you Carlos, Janey, and Joshua for the good time! You are a beautiful family!!!
Spring is a great time for portraits! The sun offers a soft light, while the temperature never raises too high. So it was this past Saturday when I photographed little David and his mom at Kennedy Park in Coconut Grove. Being half Chilean and half Colombian, little David couldn’t stay away from his native attire; He looked so cute!
Photographing children is no easy task, but I’ve learned that the best way to photograph them is to let them be. Give them the freedom they need to express who they are. David was a perfect example as I photographed him while he was playing on his own.

At some point, I was laying on the floor some distance from him and he decided to crawls towards me! It was very cute!

Mommy and little David taking a stroll by the park. This is by far my favorite image of the entire collection.
